The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were the first band to bring the song to a wide audience during the folk revival of the early 1960s. This video in black and white was recorded in Chicago in 1962.
The Dubliners recorded the song, featuring the late, great Ciaran Bourke on vocals.
Shane MacGowan with his band The Popes does a brilliant version. He approaches the song in his usual powerful and uncompromising style, which works particularly well with the fighting spirit of the song.
Tommy Makem also liked to perform the song as part of his solo performances, away from The Clancy Brothers.
