Congratulations to Irish singer Van Morrison for the stunning success of his song Brown Eyed Girl, which has just passed the ten million mark for the number of airplays on radio stations in the United States.

The Belfast born singer received a special award for his outstanding achievement from Broadcast Music Inc – the organisation that collects royalty fees for performers when their music is played on radio or in public places.
Michael William Balfe
Michael William Balfe (15 May 1808 – 20 October 1870) has been described as the Irish Mozart because he was a musical child prodigy and began composing when he was only seven.
He was born in Dublin and became one of Ireland’s greatest composers. By the age of six, he was playing violin for his father’s dancing classes.
When he was seven, he composed a polacca (a slow dance of Polish origin, in 3/4 time). On 30th May in 1817, when he was nine, he gave his first public concert playing the violin.
His music is still performed today by major artists like Enya.
Thomas Moore
On May 28, 1779, poet and songwriter Thomas Moore (1779–1852) was born in Dublin. As a child, he enjoyed music and performing arts, and at one point wanted to be an actor.
His mother wanted him to become a lawyer, so he studied Law at Trinity College, and there became a friend of Robert Emmet (Irish nationalist and rebel leader). Moore, however, was not involved with Emmet’s United Irishmen.
