Irish composers honoured by new music academy

There are several wonderful Irish composers and they don’t always get the recognition they deserve, either at home in Ireland or abroad.

The Irish Music Rights Organisation, known as IMRO, recently set up an academy to help put matters straight and help people get the recognition they deserve.

Now it has chosen its first two candidates to be inducted into the IMRO Academy. They are Bill Whelan and Brendan Graham.

Whelan is the composer of the music for the spectacularly successful Riverdance, the show made famous across the world by Michael Flatley.

Ronan Keating’s new album called When Ronan Met Burt has now been officially released.

The album features the Irish singer performing tracks written and produced by the legendary American song writer Burt Bacharach.

Irish singer Ronan Keating and the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach have released a video to promote their collaborative album, When Ronan Met Burt.

The album features the fomer Boyzone star singing some of Bacharach’s most famous songs such as I’ll Never Fall in Love Again and Make It Easy On Yourself.

The video features shots from the recording sessions and interviews with both men.

Irish music has always been attracted to folk heroes and there aren’t many folk heroes more inspiring than Nelson Mandela.

He has certainly inspired Irish musician John Hughes. Hughes was managing the Irish group The Corrs when they played at the South Africa Freedom Day concert in London in 2001.
