Oonagh Cassidy – great songs and a lilting Irish voice

Oonagh Cassidy, Irish singer/songwriter performing in the Sage concert hall Gateshead Newcastle

Oonagh Cassidy

Imagine a subtle mix of Katie Melua and Cara Dillon and you’ll an idea of the musical style of Oonagh Cassidy.

The result though is a unique sound that is unmistakably her own, She writes most of her own songs and performs them with beautiful lilting Irish voice.

Oonagh also covers songs by other artists but does so in a style of her own. She does a wonderful version of Cindi Lauper’s Time After Time and puts her own highly individual stamp on it.

Oonagh grew up in an Irish musical family

Oonagh comes from Northern Ireland and like many Irish performers, grew up in a musical family. She was encouraged to sing and play guitar from an early age and was already an accomplished performer by the time she was a teenager.

She wrote her first song when she was 15 and has been writing and recording ever since.

She insists that her songs should portray real emotion and have a power that comes from using simple but tender and moving imagery – all put across in powerful yet beautiful melodies.

Oonagh was invited to the BAFTA screening of ‘Daddy’s Girl’ in London and performed a selection of her songs for the celebrity guests.

Cover version of Cindi Lauper’s Time After Time

Oonagh completed the material for the release of her EP ‘Then and Again’ at the end of 2008 and is currently working on the music video to support her own version of Cindy Laupers track ‘Time After Time’.

The EP was mixed and mastered in London with the help of acclaimed music producer and director Nigel Champion.

Nigel, famous for having formed the dance sensation N-Joi in 1989 became more involved with writing, producing and remixing music for chart and the British film industry- after N-Joi went their separate ways in 1995.

However, popular demand saw the band regroup after 7 years with a new member; Andrew Loveday.

None of this possible ‘without my family’

Alongside Nigel, Oonagh’s band mate, James E Murphy, from her on-going musical project Video-Rideo, has been an incredible help to the acoustic arrangements on this EP and she continues to collaborate with all parties involved for the release of her debut album in the coming months.

Oonagh feels indebted to the people who have helped her produce and record ‘Then and Again’ and further admits “None of this would have been possible had it not been for my manager Andy- or indeed my mum, dad and family, they have all been an incredible support to me, especially over the last year. Really, I wouldn’t have any of this if it weren’t for them.”
